Footnote to Mack Lowrey ~

In the early 1960s, my dad took me to see Mack Lowrey's setup in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. A few years later, around 1967 or '68, I had begun driving and stopped by Mack's place. Outside he had real trains all over the property. At the one end of the lot, Mack had a two car setup consisting of a dinning car and sleeper and on the back an observation car. These were the streamline chrome plated cars from the early 1950s. They were packed full of stuff. I met Mack and we talked for awhile. I asked why he wasn't using the trains outside for displays. I said, "You should clear them out and use them." He explained that his plan was to make those two cars into a combo restaurant/motel. The dinning car would be the restaurant, the sleeper would be the motel and the observation car would be a lounge. But he said that he didn't have the time to clean out all the junk. I made him a deal. I said I would clean out both cars free of charge if I could keep whatever I wanted. He said I could not have any parts to the cars themselves, but anything else was fine. I spent three days cleaning the cars out and got some really cool junk. Store dummies, display cabinet shelving, model trains in G and O gauge which Mack let me have. several old adding machines, several rolls of "new" carpet, many antiques such as old telephones, a late 1940s TV set, etc. Mack was happy and so was I. Sadly he never got around to converting the cars. Soon after, he moved his operation to downtown Akron, then several years later he died of cancer. Two of the G-Gauge trains that I got while cleaning the cars out I still have.
